November 1, 2013 – Orlando, FL – In an effort to provide a greater value to its senior patients, Orlando-based MetroHealth, Inc. is relocating its Downtown Orlando office. Formerly located on the 6th floor of Lucerne Medical Plaza, the practice is moving into a newly renovated 4,600 sq. ft. single story office at 1106 Lucerne Terrace, just one block away.
With the move comes an expansion of MetroHealth’s groundbreaking concierge medicine program for seniors. Concierge offerings include transportation to and from appointments in luxury Cadillac sedans, access to a patient care coordinator between appointments, and in-home and in-hospital visits when medically necessary.
What’s unique about the model is that these services are offered free of charge to patients who are beneficiaries of a MetroHealth approved Medicare Advantage plan. This level of additional service is unprecedented within Central Florida, and it represents an oncoming shift in the way seniors insured through Medicare obtain geriatric medical care.
Medical Director Stephen Quaning, M.D. drew inspiration for the program from the hospitality industry. “We set out to create a model where our senior patients not only get the quality medical care that they need, but also a little more,” he said. “The concierge model has been around for quite some time in a primary care setting for affluent clients, but it has never been afforded to seniors insured through Medicare.”
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 10.2% of Orange County’s estimated 1.2 million residents are over 65 years of age. That percentage is projected to rise as the nation is set to experience an unprecedented aging of the population. In fact, people over 80 represent the fastest growing segment of our population.
“Geriatric care is often an afterthought in the mainstream media, as other specialties seem to grab all the headlines,” said Quaning. “However, our country is poised for a major shift. We are trying to help shape the future of geriatric care.”
